Indian wrestlers will be hoping to give a better performance compared to last Asian Games. In 2014 Games, the wrestlers won a gold, a silver, and three bronzes to give a total of 5 medals. The performances of wrestlers in the recently held Asian wrestling Championship gives a lot of hope to wrestling fans. Indian contingent won a total of 8 medals which included a gold, a silver and six bronzes.
There are four wrestlers from freestyle categories whom India can except medals of different colors. We will now have a look at those prospective wrestlers and the kind of competition they will face in Asian Games.
Bajrang Punia (65kg) – He is the prodigy of Yogeshwar Dutt and will aim to make his coach and India proud by winning a Gold in Asian Games. The 24-year-old had won a Gold at Commonwealth games and secured a Bronze in 2018 Asian Wrestling Championship. Bajrang will face tough competition from Kazhaskstan, Japaneseand Iranian Wrestlers. But 24 year old will be confident as he tried to rectify his errors with help of Yogeshwar during the recently held national camp for Asian Games. Indian fans can expect a medal from him, the color will depend on kind of performance he delivers on that particular day.
Sushil Kumar (74kg) –Two-time Olympic medalist will aim to add Asian games medal into his tally. He has been training in Georgia under his personal coach and looks in fine shape for Games. The performance delivered by Sushil in commonwealth games to win a gold medal was unbelievable as he did not even concede a single point in all his four bouts he fought. Asian games will be like a mini Olympics but if Sushil his able to deliver his best, a gold medal can be expected from him. Wrestlers from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Japan, and Mongolia are likely to give a tough fight in the quest for his medal.
Vinesh Phogat (50kg) – Vinesh has been performing really well and has won a silver in 2018 Asian Wrestling Championship. In the commonwealth games, she won a gold in her category. She will face tough competition from Japanese and Chinese Wrestlers in her journey to Gold. The 23-year-old will surely win a medal but the color of it cannot be predicted.
Sakshi Malik ( 62kg) – Sakshi’s performances have not been upto the mark after her Silver medal at the 2016 Olympics. Even in Commonwealth games, she was only able to win a bronze where the level of competition is much lower than Asian Games. A wrestler of her caliber cannot be ignored but has to be really at her best to have any chances of winning a medal. She will face challenge from Mongolian, Chinese and Japanese wrestlers.
All other freestyle wrestlers have an outside of winning a medal in their category only if they are able to produce an exceptional performance.
The wrestlers in Greeco Roman can put up a good show but it will be very tough for them to win medals. Some of them might win a bronze in their categories.WRESTLING PROFILE
